Colorado is a diverse state known for its varied and colorful geography. From the snow-capped alpine peaks of the Rockies of the central part of the state, to red rock canyons and river gorges of the southwest, Colorado truly is a diverse and colorful state. Colorado is home to the tallest sand dunes in North America (Great Sand Dunes National Park & Preserve), 53 mountain peaks over 14 thousand feet in elevation, the legendary Black Canyon of the Gunnison, and the breathtaking alpine scenery of Rocky Mountain National Park, and the highest average elevation of any state in the United States.
Fortunately, conservationists and public land advocates have fought to preserve the wild and pristine portions of this state. In 1964, Congress enacted the Wilderness Act which legally defined the meaning of a modern, federally protected wilderness. I encourage you to explore Colorado’s wilderness areas and become a steward that advocates for the protection of these treasured lands.
I began Colorado’s Wild Areas in 2010 as a personal challenge to hike and photograph all of Colorado’s wilderness areas. This website grew out of my desire to share the wild and unspoiled backcountry of this great state. I hope this website inspires you to discover and enjoy the scenery of Colorado.
My family moved to Colorado during my high school years and settled in northern El Paso County where I was introduced to the wonders of the Colorado outdoors. I graduated from the University of Colorado in Colorado Springs with an electrical engineering degree in 2007. I live in the city of Colorado Springs with my wife and my son planning my next escape to the high country.
My passion is to photograph Colorado’s wilderness landscapes. To me, it is a way to bring the beauty and the emotion of these scenes to the public in order to raise awareness of our heritage and of God’s majesty revealed in his creation. For a gallery of selected wilderness photographs, visit my online photo gallery on 500px.com: Colorado Landscapes. Unless otherwise credited, the images on this website were produced by me. You may contact me if you wish to obtain permission to use my photography.
For photography equipment I use a Pentax K5 camera body, a Gitzo GT2531 tripod and a Really Right Stuff BH-40 ballhead mount.
