Colorado Backcountry Delivers Showy Autumn Colors

Click to enlarge photo I took this photo of Marcellina Mountain and the Raggeds Mountains framed by aspens on the Dark Canyon Trail near Kebler Pass, Colorado. The fall colors this year didn’t disappoint, thanks to monsoon moisture that impacted the state in July and August this summer and kept the aspens in healthy condition. The areas near Crested Butte, and especially the areas in and around the Raggeds Wilderness and the West Elk Wilderness were in their prime around the last week of September. Colorado 2012 Fall Color Report

Across Colorado’s high country, the aspens, willows, and cottonwood trees are turning color. Due to the drought (low winter snowfall, and hot summer temperatures) the aspens are stressed and will be turning color earlier than normal. Peak color has already occurred in a few areas. and peak color in many areas will likely happen between September 15-22.
